While exploring websites on Neocities, Nekoweb, and other indie-web communities, I noticed that many webmasters participate in webrings. These are people who build, customize, and maintain their websites themselves rather than relying entirely on social media platforms. Seeing these communities inspired me to create a webring of my own for bloggers.
This webring is open to anyone using Blogger, personal hosting, or any other platform, as long as their site meets the requirements below.
What is a Webring?
A webring is a collection of websites connected together through a shared navigation system, usually centered around a common interest, theme, or community. Traditionally, each site in the ring links to the previous and next site, allowing visitors to discover other websites by moving through the ring. Webrings became popular in the 1990s and are still used today by independent website owners as a way to support one another and help visitors discover new sites. What is a webring? What's the Benefit of Having a Webring Widget?
One of the biggest challenges for personal websites is getting discovered. A webring helps solve that problem by connecting independent sites together.
When visitors see the webring widget on a member's website, they can click through to discover other sites in the ring. Instead of using the traditional "Previous" and "Next" buttons found in many classic webrings, this project displays participating websites in a rotating showcase similar to an advertisement banner.
Think of it as an alternative to search engines and a community-powered advertising network for personal websites. The widget automatically cycles through member sites every 30 seconds, helping visitors discover new blogs and projects. Unlike commercial advertising networks, this webring does not display paid advertisements, and joining is completely free.
How to Join
Before submitting your website, please make sure it meets the following requirements:
- Images must be square and between 180×180 and 360×360 pixels.
- Maximum image file size is 1 MB.
- Add the webring iframe widget to your website first.
- Publish the page containing the widget before submitting your site.
- The widget must be reasonably visible to visitors. If users have to navigate through multiple pages or scroll through an excessive number of other widgets to find it, your submission may be rejected.
- Your website must contain actual content and not be an empty or unfinished page.
After submitting your website, I will review it and either approve or reject the application. Most submissions are reviewed within 24 hours, although occasionally it may take longer. If your site has not been approved after a week, it was most likely rejected.
Submitting Your Website
You can submit your website through the GitHub by creating an issue or by leaving a comment below.
If submitting through the comments section:
- Copy the submission code
Website URL: Image URL (square banner): Page where the widget is embedded: Website Description: Mature Content (NSFW, SFW)? - Paste it into the parser tool
- Select Preformatted (Pre)
- Then copy and paste the resulting output into your comment
I look forward to seeing your website and helping grow a network of independent bloggers and creators.
